Two individuals, an Iranian man aged 34 and a Romanian woman aged 31, have been charged after attempting to enter a Royal Navy base in Scotland that houses the United Kingdom’s nuclear submarine fleet. The facility at Faslane is home to four submarines equipped with Trident ballistic missiles, forming the country’s nuclear deterrent.
Police said the pair were arrested following the attempted breach and are scheduled to appear in court in Dumbarton. Authorities have previously warned of an increased threat of Iranian espionage activity within Britain.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions linked to Britain’s support for the United States in its conflict with Iran. The British government has allowed American forces to use certain bases for what it describes as defensive operations, a move that has drawn criticism from Iranian officials and raised concerns about potential retaliation.
