Anthony Albanese pushes back on WFH suggestion

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has rejected suggestions that Australians should work from home or curb travel in response to fuel‑saving advice from the International Energy Agency. Speaking in Melbourne, he said the agency's recommendations were global in nature and not directed specifically at Australia.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles echoed that position, describing the proposals as options rather than instructions and urging Australians to continue with business as usual. He said the government's priority remains maintaining fuel supply, particularly to regional areas, as conflict in the Middle East disrupts global supply chains and pushes up prices.

The International Energy Agency has urged countries to consider measures such as working from home where possible, lowering highway speed limits, increasing public transport use and encouraging carpooling to reduce oil demand. Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the advice was not prescriptive and that a one size fits all approach would not suit every country, though he acknowledged flexible work arrangements are an established part of modern life.

The New South Wales government said it is factoring the agency's guidance into its contingency planning and has encouraged greater use of public transport where possible.
