A cabinet minister has said there is 'no assessment to substantiate' Israel's claim that Iran possesses long range missiles capable of reaching London. Housing Secretary Steve Reed stated there is no specific assessment indicating that Iran is targeting the United Kingdom or that it has the capability to do so.

His comments follow reports that Iran fired two ballistic missiles toward the joint United States and United Kingdom military base on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, roughly 3,800 kilometres from Iran. One missile reportedly failed and fell short, while the other was intercepted. Reed declined to provide operational details about how close the missiles came to the territory.

Israel's military said Iran has sought to develop missiles capable of reaching parts of Europe, Asia and Africa, and claimed such weapons could potentially reach cities including London. Reed reiterated that there is no evidence supporting that claim and said British armed forces remain fully capable of defending the country and its assets. Analysts believe Iran's longest range weapons can travel about 2,000 kilometres, significantly short of both Diego Garcia and London.
