Hundreds of additional police officers have been deployed to protect Jewish communities in London after three hooded men set fire to four ambulances outside a synagogue in Golders Green. The vehicles belonged to Hatzola, a Jewish volunteer emergency service, and were destroyed in the early hours of the morning when oxygen canisters exploded, damaging nearby buildings. No injuries were reported.
The attack is being treated as an anti-Semitic hate crime, while counter-terrorism officers investigate possible links to Iran. A group calling itself Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right posted footage online claiming responsibility and has previously claimed similar attacks on Jewish sites in Europe. Security analysts and Israeli officials have suggested the group may have connections to pro-Iranian networks.
Police leaders described the threat from Iran as grave but said it was too early to directly attribute the incident to the Iranian state. The Home Secretary and Prime Minister condemned the firebombing as a sickening assault on the Jewish community and the country as a whole. Authorities have increased patrols, strengthened security at Jewish institutions ahead of Passover, and pledged government funding to replace the destroyed ambulances.
