Aussie sport star says her Dubai base is SAFER than living Down Under

Former Paralympian Jessica Smith says she feels safer living in Dubai than in Australia, despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The 41-year-old swimmer, who competed at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Greece, moved to the United Arab Emirates for her husband's work and has raised her three children there since 2019.

Smith described Dubai as a place where more than 200 nationalities live side by side and where safety is deeply valued. She said the sense of security is something she has not experienced in Australia, pointing to crime levels and social tensions back home. Although some residents are feeling anxious due to regional unrest, she said families are supporting one another and making decisions in their best interests.

Despite official travel warnings, Smith intends to return to Dubai after a recent visit to Australia. She also pushed back against criticism of people living in the region, saying it is unfair to label an entire area based on conflict, and revealed she has faced online ridicule over her decision to remain there.
