Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has ordered the foreign ministry to summon the United States chargé d'affaires in Baghdad following a deadly strike on a base used by Iraqi military units. The prime minister's office said the move comes in response to attacks that targeted members of the Popular Mobilization Forces.
Iraq's defense ministry and security sources reported that the strike killed seven soldiers and wounded 13 others at a site belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces, a coalition of mainly Shiite militias that operates as part of the Iraqi armed forces.
The Popular Mobilization Forces were formed more than a decade ago to fight the Islamic State group. The coalition includes Kataeb Hezbollah, a powerful militia that has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States.
