Scottish Government introduces emergency heating oil scheme

The Scottish Government has announced a £10 million emergency scheme to support households struggling with rising heating oil and liquid petroleum gas costs, more than doubling the £4.6 million allocated by the United Kingdom Government. Ministers said the funding provided by the United Kingdom Government was insufficient amid sharp price increases linked to the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

From April 1, eligible households will be able to apply for grants of up to £300. The scheme will run for up to six months and will prioritise low-income households, including those receiving means-tested social security, as well as people with disabilities and others facing unavoidable additional heating needs.

Housing Secretary Mairi McAllan said the sudden surge in fuel prices had been a shock, particularly for rural and island communities, and called on the Prime Minister to convene an emergency meeting of the four nations' heads of government. She also urged further fully funded support and long-awaited regulation to protect consumers if high prices continue.

The scheme will be administered by Advice Direct Scotland, which said it is working quickly to make the fund operational and will release full application details shortly.
