The Prince and Princess of Wales attended the enthronement of Dame Sarah Mullally as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, with Prince William representing the King at the historic ceremony in Canterbury Cathedral. The couple joined a congregation of about 2,000 people to witness the formal installation, which marks the symbolic beginning of Dame Sarah’s ministry as the 106th holder of the office.
During her first sermon, Dame Sarah spoke about hopes for peace in the Middle East and acknowledged past safeguarding failures within the church, referring to victims and survivors and the pain caused by actions, inactions and institutional failings. She encouraged people to visit a church for prayer or conversation, saying that knowing God is present on life’s journey makes a difference.
William, who will one day become Supreme Governor of the Church of England, has recently faced questions about his personal faith. An aide said he holds a quieter but sincere commitment to the church and understands the responsibility he will inherit. The ceremony included a formal mandate from the King authorising Dame Sarah’s installation and featured music and performances, including a lively contribution from the African Choir of Norfolk.
