House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has joined more than 130 Democratic lawmakers in cosponsoring legislation that would codify sanctions on violent settlers first introduced under former president Joe Biden. The sanctions were reversed by President Donald Trump on his first day back in office.
Jeffries' decision signals broad Democratic backing for the West Bank Violence Prevention Act, despite his reputation as a strong supporter of Israel. A companion measure in the Senate has also drawn support from more than 40 Democratic senators.
The push to formalize the sanctions comes amid a renewed rise in settler violence across the West Bank. However, the legislation is unlikely to advance due to Republican control of both Congress and the White House.
