President Donald Trump said a deal to end the war with Iran is near, claiming Tehran is eager to negotiate despite publicly rejecting a 15 point American ceasefire proposal. Iranian leaders dismissed the plan, which reportedly included sanctions relief, limits on its nuclear and missile programs, and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and instead issued their own demands such as reparations, security guarantees and sovereignty over the strategic waterway. Iran's foreign minister said no negotiations were taking place, contradicting Trump’s assertion that talks were underway.
Fighting has intensified as Israel carried out wide scale strikes across Iran, including around the city of Isfahan, home to key military and nuclear facilities. Iran has continued launching attacks on Israel and targeting shipping routes in the Gulf region. The war has killed more than 1,500 people in Iran, nearly 1,100 in Lebanon, and dozens in Israel and among American service members, while displacing millions.
The head of United States Central Command said American forces have struck more than 10,000 targets and destroyed most of Iran’s major naval vessels and a large share of its missile and drone production facilities. Iran has not acknowledged the reported losses. Meanwhile, Germany’s defense minister called the conflict an economic catastrophe and said his country does not want to be drawn into the war, urging a ceasefire and offering support to secure peace once achieved.
