Donald Trump has mocked Britain's aircraft carriers as 'toys compared to what we have', escalating tensions with London over its limited support for the United States-led war against Iran. Speaking at the White House, he said Britain had offered to send a carrier only after the conflict was over and told reporters he had responded: 'that's wonderful, thank you very much - don't bother.' He also said he was 'very disappointed' that Britain initially refused to allow the use of the Diego Garcia base for bomber strikes against Iran.
The remarks come amid strain in the transatlantic relationship, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer resisting deeper involvement in the conflict. Downing Street has rejected claims that it offered to deploy either of the Royal Navy's two aircraft carriers to the Middle East. Britain has permitted defensive operations from its bases but has sought to avoid being drawn directly into offensive strikes, while energy prices have surged as fighting continues.
Questions have also resurfaced over the readiness of the Royal Navy after Germany deployed a frigate to lead a maritime task group in place of a British warship that had been reassigned. The Defence Secretary admitted he was 'not happy with the situation we have with British warships' when pressed on how many vessels are fit for combat.
Trump further criticised the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation for failing to assist in strikes on Iran and warned Tehran of devastating consequences if it does not accept a proposed peace plan. Indirect talks are reportedly under way with Pakistan acting as a mediator, while Iran has tightened its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil supplies, and Israel has vowed to continue its attacks.
