Spain has closed its airspace to military aircraft from the United States involved in attacks on Iran, expanding an earlier decision to deny access to jointly operated military bases. Defense Minister Margarita Robles said the government will not authorize the use of either bases or airspace for actions linked to the war.
The move forces United States military planes to reroute around Spain on their way to the Middle East, though exceptions will be made for emergency situations. The decision was first reported by Spanish newspaper El Pais, citing military sources.
Spanish officials said the measure reflects the government's stance against participating in or supporting what it views as a unilateral and unlawful war. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has strongly criticized the attacks on Iran, while President Donald Trump has threatened trade retaliation over Spain's refusal to grant military access.
