Israel's US envoy: War aims 'probably can't' be achieved without regime change in Iran

Israel's ambassador to Washington, Yechiel Leiter, said that Israel likely cannot achieve its war aims against Iran without regime change in Tehran. He stated that the central objective is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles and supporting regional proxy groups, adding that while success without regime change would be acceptable, it is unlikely, and regime collapse may be necessary.

Regime change has not been an official goal of the war, and recent Israeli messaging has emphasized weakening Iran's military capabilities rather than toppling its leadership. However, Leiter's remarks suggest that some officials see a fundamental political shift in Tehran as essential to long term security.

Leiter also described growing cooperation between Israel and several Gulf states, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait. He said these countries have sought Israeli assistance during the conflict and called for a decisive outcome that addresses Iran's nuclear ambitions, missile programs, drones, proxy networks and threats to international shipping lanes.

According to Leiter, Iran has been put on notice that Israel and its regional partners will continue acting even if the United States reduces its involvement, signaling a sustained effort to counter Iranian influence and capabilities in the region.
