Foreign ministers from 10 European countries, including Britain, France and Italy, have urged Israel not to expand its military operations in Lebanon and to respect the country’s territorial integrity. In a joint statement, the ministers called for restraint amid rising cross-border violence.
The statement, also signed by the European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, expressed full support for the government and people of Lebanon, saying they are once again suffering the consequences of a war that is not theirs.
The renewed tensions began on March 2, when Hezbollah resumed hostilities with Israel in the context of the war between the United States and Israel and Iran. Israel has since increased its ground presence in Lebanon and carried out airstrikes against Hezbollah targets, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
