Iran has formed a temporary governing council following the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The move activates a constitutional mechanism designed to ensure continuity of leadership in the Islamic Republic.
The council is composed of the sitting president, the head of the judiciary and a member of the Guardian Council selected by the Expediency Council. Current members include reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian and judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei.
Under Iranian law, the Assembly of Experts is required to appoint a new supreme leader as soon as possible, initiating a formal succession process amid a period of national uncertainty.
