Tens of thousands gathered in Tehran to mourn the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as state media confirmed the loss and announced temporary leadership arrangements. The public displays of grief came amid heightened tensions following strikes that also killed other senior figures.
According to Iranian reports, a council made up of President Masoud Pezeshkian, the head of the judiciary and a representative of the Guardian Council will assume the supreme leader's duties on an interim basis. The move is intended to ensure continuity in governance during the transition period.
State media also confirmed the deaths of Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to Khamenei, and Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Their deaths mark a significant blow to Iran's political and military leadership at a critical moment for the country.
