High Court: Government has made no progress in enforcement against ultra-Orthodox draft dodgers

The High Court of Justice has sharply criticized the government for failing to make progress in enforcing military conscription for ultra-Orthodox men who ignored draft orders. In a unanimous decision, the justices described the state's response to petitions seeking a contempt of court ruling as unsatisfactory and said aspects of the situation were extremely worrying.

The court noted that the government missed previous deadlines and failed to provide factual details about key enforcement measures, including proposed socioeconomic sanctions and criminal enforcement steps. Judges also expressed concern over the conduct of the police and their coordination with military authorities, saying the situation does not align with prior court rulings.

According to the attorney general, military officials reported that police have refused to assist with arrest operations in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods. The court ordered the government to submit a full and complete update by March 22, after a scheduled hearing was postponed due to the conflict with Iran.
