Tension gripped Chennai on Sunday after members of the Tamil Nadu Shia Muslim Jamath, along with several political leaders, attempted to march towards the United States Consulate in Anna Salai to protest American attacks on Iran. Police detained around 200 protesters and housed them in community halls, while traffic near Royapettah Government Hospital and Peters Road was temporarily suspended.
The demonstration was organized to condemn the reported killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and to demand an end to the war. Protesters marched from Royapettah Hospital to New College, raising slogans against the United States and Israel. Authorities deployed more than 250 police personnel around the consulate in addition to regular security arrangements.
During the protest, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi president Thol Thirumavalavan said that many Tamils work in Gulf countries and urged India not to remain silent on the issue. He warned that the actions of the United States and Israel could lead to a wider global conflict. Leaders from several parties announced statewide demonstrations on March 3 in Chennai and other major cities to continue opposing the American action.
