Britain's Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri in Cyprus sustained limited damage following a suspected overnight drone strike, according to Cypriot authorities and the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense. Officials said the incident caused no casualties.
A spokesperson for the Cyprus government said information from multiple sources indicates that an unmanned drone was involved. Residents living near the base were advised to shelter in place until further notice after a security alert warned of a suspected drone impact.
Britain maintains sovereignty over two military bases on the eastern Mediterranean island, which is a member of the European Union. The Akrotiri base occupies a large peninsula on Cyprus's southern coast and was last directly attacked in the mid-1980s by Libyan militants.
