A woman on trial for allegedly expressing support for Hamas told a court she did not know the full details of the 7 October attacks when she described the day as a 'victory' during a rally speech in Brighton. Hanin Barghouthi, 24, denies the charge and said she was only referring to what she believed was a 'break-out' from Gaza after seeing a video online.
Barghouthi said she had not heard about the killings, kidnappings, or the attack on a music festival at the time of her speech. She told jurors that if she had known about those events, she would have attended a vigil instead. She denied supporting Hamas and said her politics did not align with the group.
The court heard that Barghouthi believed Hamas was a small rebel group and insisted she does not support kidnapping or violence. Her defence described her as a young woman of good character with no background in terrorism, arguing that her speech focused on Palestine and human rights rather than Hamas. The trial continues.
