The Israel Stroke Society has raised concern over a significant drop in hospital arrivals for acute stroke cases since the start of the war with Iran. Prof. Ronen Leker, director of the Stroke Center at Hadassah Medical Center, urged the public not to delay seeking medical care at the first signs of a stroke.
He emphasized that early treatment is critical, noting that intravenous medication to reopen a blocked artery can be given within 4.5 hours from the onset of symptoms. Warning signs include sudden weakness on one side of the body, speech difficulties, facial drooping, vision problems, severe dizziness with loss of balance, and sudden confusion.
The society also stressed that stroke risk can be reduced by at least fifty percent through preventive care. Managing high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and blood lipids, avoiding smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and engaging in regular physical activity are key measures to lower the risk.
