The International Paralympic Committee is celebrating the largest Winter Paralympic Games in history as Milan Cortina prepares to open, marking the 50th anniversary of the event. A record 616 athletes from 56 nations will compete in 79 medal events across six sports, surpassing previous participation milestones. The Games begin Friday with an opening ceremony that some nations plan to boycott following the reinstatement of the Russian flag and national anthem.

Organizers also announced a record number of female competitors for the fourth consecutive Winter Games, with 160 women մասնակցating. Five sports will feature record female representation, and several countries are sending their highest number of women athletes ever. Athletes and officials hailed the milestone as a sign of growing inclusivity and opportunity within winter para sports.

Five countries are making their Winter Paralympic debut, while several others have brought their largest delegations ever. China leads with the biggest team, followed by the United States and Canada, as host nation Italy fields its largest roster to date. Officials said the record participation reflects rising global interest and increasing competitive depth across events.
