'Establishing new passage': US says two navy ships crossed Strait of Hormuz; Iran says otherwise

Two United States Navy guided missile destroyers crossed the Strait of Hormuz and began operations aimed at clearing sea mines that American officials say were previously laid by Iran. United States Central Command said the effort is part of a broader mission to ensure safe maritime passage and restore commercial traffic through the strategically vital waterway.

Admiral Brad Cooper said the Navy has started establishing a new maritime passage that will soon be shared with the shipping industry to encourage the free flow of commerce. Additional American assets, including underwater drones, are expected to support the mine clearance effort, as some mines reportedly cannot be located and may have drifted due to sea currents.

Iran disputed the American account, claiming it warned a United States warship it would be attacked within 30 minutes if it crossed the strait, and said the vessel retreated after receiving the warning. The transit came amid ongoing tensions and peace talks, as well as increased oil tanker traffic through the chokepoint, marking the largest single day of shipments since the conflict began.
