Breaking barriers: Susan Coyle becomes first woman to command Australian Army

Australia has appointed Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as its first female Chief of Army, marking the first time in the force’s 125-year history that a woman will command a service branch. Defence Minister Richard Marles described the decision as a deeply historic moment, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it a landmark for the nation’s defence forces.

Coyle, 55, enlisted in 1987 and later graduated from the Royal Military College into the Royal Australian Corps of Signals. During her three-decade career, she has served in the Solomon Islands, Afghanistan, Timor Leste and the Middle East, and most recently led joint capabilities including space and cyber domains. She holds three postgraduate degrees and is a distinguished graduate of the United States Army War College.

Her appointment comes as the army undergoes significant modernization, expanding its long-range firepower, drone capabilities and cyber operations. It also follows ongoing efforts to increase female representation, with women currently making up about 21 percent of the Australian Defence Force and 18.5 percent of senior leadership. Leaders said her achievement would be significant for women serving and considering a future in the military.
