Australia will join a strictly defensive multinational mission led by France and the United Kingdom to help secure shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, Defense Minister Richard Marles announced after meeting with representatives from 40 countries.
Australia will contribute a Wedgetail surveillance aircraft that is already deployed in the region to help protect the United Arab Emirates from drone attacks launched by Iran. The mission is intended to safeguard vital maritime trade routes.
Marles said the effort would complement diplomatic engagement and de escalation initiatives, while demonstrating a tangible commitment to protecting international trade and regional stability.
