A small group of right-wing activists protested outside the home of Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, calling on him to 'protect the fighters' and chanting accusations including 'traitor' and 'subverter of Israel.' The demonstrators also played loud music and waved Israeli flags, with at least one flag bearing the word 'Messiah.' The group reportedly calls itself Lions of the Right.
The protest was sparked by the military’s decision to jail a soldier who wore an unauthorized 'Messiah' patch on his uniform. Zamir had personally confronted the soldier during a visit to a West Bank post, leading to disciplinary action.
Opposition leaders strongly condemned the demonstration, warning that targeting the military chief at his home crossed a red line. Former military chief and current opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot described the protest as a severe warning sign for Israeli society and criticized the government for failing to denounce it. Former prime minister Naftali Bennett also accused the country’s leadership of effectively backing the demonstrators by remaining silent.
