Over half of US Senate Democrats back failed measures to block arms sales to Israel

The United States Senate has blocked two resolutions aimed at halting over six hundred seventy-five million dollars in arms sales to Israel, despite a historic shift in Democratic support for such measures. For the first time, more than half of Senate Democrats voted to block the transfer of assault rifles and heavy bombs to Israel, reflecting growing discontent within the party over Israel's conduct in the Gaza war. Senator Bernie Sanders, who introduced the resolutions, celebrated the increasing opposition among Democrats, noting that support for blocking arms sales has grown significantly since previous votes.

The votes come amid mounting criticism of Israel's military campaign in Gaza, ongoing humanitarian crises, and stalled hostage negotiations. Aid organizations have called for a major increase in humanitarian assistance, as food insecurity and chaos persist in the region. Meanwhile, the Palestinian death toll continues to rise, with tens of thousands reported killed since the conflict began.
