A new animated short film titled The Sacred Society explores the sacred Jewish burial rituals performed by the Chevra Kadisha, a group of volunteers who prepare the deceased for burial with dignity. The film was inspired by filmmaker Zelkowicz's own experience volunteering with the Chevra Kadisha in Columbus, Ohio, as a way to confront his fear of death. Using sand animation, the 12.5-minute film captures the emotional depth of these rituals and features the voices of real volunteers as they recount their experiences. The project sheds light on a centuries-old tradition and the compassion of those who serve their communities in this way.
