JD Vance's cordial - then candid - comments left no doubts over the UK-US disagreements

US vice president JD Vance met with British foreign secretary David Lammy, highlighting both the warmth and the underlying tensions in the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom. While Vance began by emphasizing the 'special relationship' between the two nations, he soon addressed the significant disagreements over Middle East policy and free speech.

On the issue of Palestine, Vance diplomatically stated that the United States has no plans to recognize a Palestinian state, subtly distancing his country from the United Kingdom's recent decision. He reiterated the US focus on ending attacks by Hamas and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but acknowledged the two countries differ on how to achieve these goals.

Vance also touched on concerns about free speech, referencing past censorship in the United States and cautioning against similar paths in the United Kingdom. The meeting ended with both sides maintaining their positions, making clear that despite cordial exchanges, notable policy divides remain.
