Former FBI and CIA Director William H. Webster dies at 101

William H. Webster, who served as director of both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency, has died at the age of 101. Webster was recognized for restoring public trust in these agencies during challenging periods, leading the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1978 to 1987 and the Central Intelligence Agency from 1987 to 1991. His career was marked by a reputation for integrity, fairness, and a commitment to justice, both as a federal judge and as a leader in law enforcement and intelligence.

Throughout his tenure, Webster focused on modernizing the Federal Bureau of Investigation, addressing organized crime, white-collar offenses, and terrorism, while also increasing diversity within the bureau. At the Central Intelligence Agency, he worked to improve relations with Congress and guide the agency through the end of the Cold War. After retiring from federal service, Webster continued to serve on various boards and commissions, contributing to national security and oversight efforts. He is survived by his family, and a memorial service will be held in Washington in September.
