A man who fired a shotgun outside a synagogue in upstate New York, with dozens of children inside, has been sentenced to ten years in federal prison. The incident occurred shortly after the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, deeply frightening the children and staff at Temple Israel of Albany. Mufid Alkhader, who shouted 'Free Palestine!' and fired two shots in the air before his gun jammed, pleaded guilty to obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs by threat of force, brandishing a firearm, and conspiring to purchase a firearm unlawfully. During sentencing, Alkhader expressed remorse and asked for forgiveness, while the judge emphasized the trauma caused to those inside the synagogue. Another individual involved in the illegal purchase of the shotgun was previously sentenced to prison.
