El Al is strongly opposing the Transport Ministry's plan to allow Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air to establish a permanent base in Israel, a move expected to increase competition and lower airfares. In a letter to the Prime Minister and Transport Minister, El Al's leadership described the proposal as a dangerous precedent that could harm Israeli airlines and threaten national security. The airline argues that domestic carriers face stricter economic and security requirements than foreign competitors, creating an uneven playing field. El Al also noted that foreign airlines have previously suspended flights during emergencies, while Israeli carriers continued to operate.
The plan would enable Wizz Air to station crews and operate more flights from Israel, as part of a broader effort to reform the aviation sector. El Al warned that this could worsen slot shortages at Ben Gurion Airport and further restrict local carriers' access. The Transport Ministry responded that it is conducting a thorough review, aiming to improve service, boost competition, and lower prices, with a final decision pending consultations with all stakeholders.
