The Tzohar Rabbinical Organization has responded to reports that the Israeli military is considering recruiting young Jews from abroad to address a shortage in military manpower. While welcoming the idea of Diaspora Jews serving in the army, Tzohar stressed that this should not replace the responsibility of Israeli citizens to participate in national defense. The organization emphasized that the duty to defend Israel applies to all Jews, but cautioned against relying on foreign volunteers to compensate for low recruitment rates among certain Israeli groups.
Tzohar also highlighted concerns about a significant portion of the Israeli population, particularly within the haredi community, who continue to avoid both religious and civic obligations to serve. The statement called on national authorities to enforce equal responsibility and ensure adequate participation in military or national service.
