Lithuania to build 'defence line' along Baltic borders

Lithuania has announced plans to construct a wide, multi-layered defence line along its borders with Russia and Belarus, featuring minefields, anti-tank barriers, and bridges rigged for demolition in the event of an invasion. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Baltic states and Poland to fortify their frontiers amid rising tensions with Russia, with all four countries seeking European Union funding for their defence projects. The Baltic defence line, stretching over 940 miles when complete, aims to slow down and redirect potential attacks, not entirely prevent them.

Lithuania is expanding its military capabilities, increasing defence spending and acquiring new equipment, including battle tanks and anti-tank missiles. Recent war games have highlighted vulnerabilities in the region, particularly at the Suwalki Gap, a crucial corridor linking the Baltics to Poland. Intelligence reports from Latvia and Denmark warn of Russia's growing capacity for sabotage and a possible attack on a NATO country within the next few years. German military leaders have echoed these concerns, urging readiness for a potential conflict as early as 2029.

The announcement comes as Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukraine, targeting civilian areas and energy infrastructure. Recent strikes have wounded civilians, including children, and damaged key facilities, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by Russian military actions in the region.
