Fatah has begun handing over weapons from Palestinian Arab factions in Lebanon, marking a tentative step toward disarming groups within refugee camps. The first transfer took place at Burj al-Barajneh camp near Beirut, with a pickup truck delivering machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades to the Lebanese army. While this move follows a plan announced by Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, other factions, including Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, have rejected the initiative, insisting their weapons are tied to the broader Palestinian cause.
The camps, which have long operated outside full Lebanese state control, continue to experience internal clashes and instability. The agreement to remove weapons is seen as a precursor to the more challenging goal of disarming Hezbollah, whose leadership remains firm in its refusal to relinquish arms.
