Iran said to return some 600 inmates to notorious prison damaged in Israeli attack

Iranian authorities have begun returning hundreds of inmates to Evin Prison in Tehran after the facility was severely damaged by an Israeli airstrike during the recent conflict between Jerusalem and Tehran. The prison, notorious for housing political prisoners and foreigners, was bombed on June 23, resulting in at least 80 deaths, according to Iranian officials. Refurbished areas have been reopened, but inmates and advocates describe the new wards as dire, lacking basic necessities and violating regulations on prisoner welfare. Reports indicate that some prisoners were violently beaten during the transfer back to the prison, and concerns remain about missing inmates, including a Swedish-Iranian doctor at risk of execution. Human Rights Watch has condemned the Israeli strike as an apparent war crime and accused both sides of endangering and mistreating prisoners during and after the attack.
