Australia expels Iran ambassador over antisemitic attacks

Australia has expelled Iran's ambassador, accusing Tehran of orchestrating antisemitic arson attacks on Jewish sites in Melbourne and Sydney. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the decision after intelligence services concluded that Iran's Revolutionary Guard directed the attacks, which targeted a kosher cafe and a synagogue in late 2024. No injuries were reported, but the incidents were described as dangerous acts of aggression intended to undermine social cohesion. In response, Australia has also withdrawn its own ambassador from Tehran, suspended embassy operations, and will legislate to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organisation. The move marks the first expulsion of an ambassador by Australia since World War II and has drawn support from Jewish leaders and Israel's embassy, while Australians in Iran have been urged to leave immediately.
