AG's office: Any plan to let Haredi draft dodgers make pilgrimage to Uman is illegal

The Attorney General's Office has informed the government that any plan to allow ultra-Orthodox men evading military service to leave Israel for the annual pilgrimage to Uman, Ukraine, would be illegal. Deputy Attorney General Gil Limon clarified that the law prohibits draft dodgers from leaving the country and that the government cannot interfere with law enforcement at border crossings.

Recent reports indicated that ultra-Orthodox lawmakers were pressuring the government to permit draft-evading yeshiva students to travel for religious observances during the High Holidays, but these efforts have not succeeded. The military is reportedly preparing to station police at airports to prevent draft evaders from departing.

Leading rabbis have advised followers facing draft orders to forgo the pilgrimage, fearing arrests could lead to conscription. The debate comes amid heightened tensions over military exemptions for the ultra-Orthodox community, with tens of thousands traveling annually to Uman for the Jewish New Year.
