Authorities in Algiers have demolished the historic 'Shalom Lebahar' synagogue, located in the Bab al-Wadi neighborhood. Built in 1894 on land donated by Shlomo Lebahar, the synagogue was a central place of worship for Algeria's Jewish community until 1962, after which it was repurposed as an event hall. Local reports indicate that the building had become structurally unsafe, posing risks to passersby and nearby schoolchildren. Despite attempts by descendants of Algerian Jews and support from an undisclosed foreign embassy to prevent its destruction, the efforts only delayed the demolition, which was ultimately carried out due to safety concerns.
