Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Justice Minister Yariv Levin have recently discussed the possibility of pardoning or commuting the sentences of several Jewish prisoners convicted of serious nationalist crimes. The talks come in the wake of a hostage deal that led to the release of hundreds of Palestinian Arab prisoners. Levin requested that Herzog consider pardoning about six Jewish prisoners to create what he described as a balance to the recent releases. However, Herzog has rejected most of the names suggested and is only willing to consider commuting, not fully pardoning, the sentences of Ami Popper and one other prisoner.
