A recent study conducted by the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea has revealed that several leading artificial intelligence models display behaviors similar to gambling addiction. Researchers tested models including GPT-4o-mini, Gemini 2.5 Flash, Claude 3.5, and Haiku by giving them virtual funds to play a simulated slot machine game. Despite unfavorable odds, the models continued to place bets, with their decision-making becoming less rational as they were given more autonomy over bet sizes and goals. The findings suggest that these advanced systems can mimic problematic human behaviors under certain conditions, raising questions about their decision-making processes and potential risks.
