Israeli authorities have identified the remains of Joshua Loitu Mollel, a Tanzanian agricultural intern who was abducted and killed by Hamas during the October 7, 2023 attack on Kibbutz Nahal Oz. Mollel, 21, had only recently arrived in Israel for his first trip abroad, hoping to learn more about farming and start his own business. His body was returned to Israel after forensic identification, bringing some comfort to his grieving family after more than two years of uncertainty.
Mollel is survived by his parents and four siblings, and his death has been mourned by both the Tanzanian and Israeli communities. The Israeli government and hostages’ families have expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing their commitment to securing the return of the remaining six slain hostages still held in Gaza. Mollel’s story has resonated widely, with tributes highlighting his kindness and optimism.
Hamas handed over Mollel’s remains to the Red Cross, which transferred them to Israeli authorities for identification. He is the 22nd deceased hostage to be repatriated since the ceasefire, which required Hamas to return all hostages. Despite the return of surviving captives, Israel continues to press for the repatriation of the remaining deceased hostages.
