Germany has approved funding for the development and deployment of a new miniature missile designed to counter drones, called the Small Anti-Drone Missile. This weapon will be integrated into Rheinmetall's Skyranger 30 anti-aircraft vehicles, complementing their onboard cannon and extending their engagement range from 2 to 6 kilometers. The missile, produced by MBDA and named DefendAir, is tailored to target small drones weighing up to 150 kilograms and will allow each Skyranger vehicle to destroy up to thirty drones in a single engagement. The project, costing approximately 490 million euros, marks the first time Germany's military will field an armored air defense system specifically designed to combat drones, reflecting lessons learned from recent conflicts and ongoing efforts to strengthen European air defenses.
