Hernandez was previously convicted in 2017, but the conviction was overturned earlier this year due to improper jury instructions. The district attorney's office stated that the available evidence supports moving forward with charges of murder and kidnapping. Etan Patz's disappearance became a landmark case, as he was one of the first missing children to have his photo featured on milk cartons across the country.
