Italy's defense and aerospace company Leonardo has unveiled plans for the 'Michelangelo Dome', a new multi-layered air defense system aimed at protecting critical infrastructure and key national interests. The system will connect various platforms across space, air, land, and sea to detect, track, intercept, and neutralize threats such as rockets, missiles, and drones, drawing inspiration from Israel's Iron Dome.
Leonardo's chief executive emphasized the importance of the system for Italy and other European countries, announcing a collaborative design effort with the Italian armed forces. The Michelangelo Dome is expected to be fully operational by 2028, following partial implementation.
Italian officials highlighted the need for advanced defense solutions against evolving threats, including hybrid warfare targeting energy infrastructure and airports. Italy has begun discussions with other European nations to integrate technologies and cooperate on the project, joining a growing list of countries developing similar air defense systems.
