IDF to seize hundreds of dunams of West Bank land for internal security barrier

The Israel Defense Forces have issued orders to seize over a thousand dunams of privately owned Palestinian land in the northern Jordan Valley for the construction of a new internal security barrier. The planned barrier, called 'Scarlet Thread,' will include a patrol road, natural obstacles, ditches, and embankments, and is intended to prevent weapons smuggling and attacks, according to military officials. The land affected belongs mainly to residents of Tubas and Tammun, with owners given a week to file objections to the seizure.

Civil rights activists and local residents have expressed concerns that the barrier will cut off communities from farmland and pastures, potentially forcing residents to relocate and accelerating displacement in the region. Similar past projects have led to significant loss of access to land and increased settler harassment. The military maintains that the project is driven solely by security needs, while critics allege it is part of a broader strategy to push Palestinian communities westward and restrict their access to the Jordan Valley.
