A bipartisan group of United States lawmakers has urged Lebanon's leadership to immediately disarm Hezbollah, warning that continued inaction could lead to renewed conflict and threaten regional stability. In a letter addressed to Lebanon's president and prime minister, the lawmakers accused Beirut of failing to meet its obligations under the November ceasefire agreement, which called for dismantling Hezbollah's military infrastructure and restoring state authority throughout the country.
The lawmakers cited reports of Hezbollah rearming and rebuilding positions in violation of a United Nations resolution, and stressed that partial measures are insufficient. They warned that Lebanon's prosperity and reform efforts cannot succeed while Hezbollah remains armed and the national army is sidelined.
Lebanon's government, facing international pressure and concerns about possible Israeli strikes, has pledged to disarm Hezbollah and is preparing to dismantle the group's military infrastructure along the border by the end of the year. However, Hezbollah's leader has condemned the plan and vowed to retain the group's weapons.
