Wildlife smuggling, poison, rabies rise in 2025, alongside uptick in nature visits

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority's annual report highlights a troubling rise in illegal wildlife smuggling, animal poisoning, and rabies cases in 2025. Criminal cases for wildlife smuggling surged, with incidents involving monkeys and lion cubs believed to have entered Israel via drone. Wildlife poisoning also increased, with over 1,300 animals affected, including mass deaths of birds due to contaminated water. Despite these challenges, populations of gazelles, Nubian ibex, turtles, and vultures remain stable, though some local declines were noted due to drought.

Visitor numbers to nature sites have rebounded to half of pre-October 2023 levels, with nearly half a million people enjoying campsites. However, fifteen hikers died, often due to lack of preparation or venturing off marked trails, prompting calls for improved public education and visitor management. The authority invested heavily in vulture protection and conducted outreach in schools, but stresses the need for more funding and regulation of pesticides to address ongoing threats.

Rabies cases have also risen, with feral dogs crossing borders and 97 incidents reported this year. The authority responded by distributing thousands of oral vaccines and improving sanitation in vulnerable areas. While some progress has been made in conservation and education, officials warn that greater efforts are needed to safeguard Israel's wildlife and natural spaces.
