Fort Kochi: The man keeping a Jewish legacy alive in an Indian city

In the historic neighborhood of Jew Town in Kochi, Thaha Ibrahim runs the last Jewish embroidery shop, preserving a centuries-old legacy in a city once home to a thriving Jewish community. The shop originally belonged to Sarah Cohen, a beloved member of the Jewish community, whose ancestors settled in Kochi when it was a major port and spice trade center. Thaha, a Muslim man, formed a deep bond with Sarah, caring for her and her shop for decades before inheriting it after her passing in 2019. Today, Thaha continues to honor Sarah's memory and keep the Jewish heritage of Jew Town alive, even as the community has dwindled to just one remaining member.
