A new bill is set to be voted on by the Constitution Committee in the Knesset, aiming to establish a special military court for prosecuting those responsible for the October 7 attacks. The proposed legislation outlines that indictments will be handled by a panel led by a retired district judge and two qualified officers, with authority to rule on severe offenses including murder, rape, and genocide. Sentences, including the death penalty, will be determined without the need for approval from the Chief of Staff, and those convicted will be excluded from prisoner release deals.
The bill also requires that all court hearings be recorded and broadcast online, unless closed-door sessions are deemed necessary. Legal representation will be available to the accused, but state funding will be denied for those suspected of security offenses. An inter-ministerial steering committee, headed by the Prime Minister and key ministers, will oversee policy and resource coordination for these prosecutions.
